Irfan Siddiqui started his career as a lyricist for a music video, and his first film song ‘Aashayein’ from the film ‘Iqbal’ went on to become a prayer in a school. Now, having come onboard as a co-producer, lyricist and dialogue writer of the ‘Disco Dancer’ musical adaptation, Irfan elaborates, “It is a light theatrical adaptation of the film and we will be retaining all three popular songs: ‘Jimmy Jimmy’, ‘Yaad Aa Raha Hain’ and ‘I am a Disco Dancer’. We have tweaked a little for which we have taken B Subhash’s consent; two additional songs will be included in the musical.”
‘Disco Dancer’ musical will also be set in the same period as the original ‘Disco Dancer’. “It is the same period and all the characters are going to be part of the musical. In fact we were to premiere the musical at NSCI in March 2020 but had to cancel it due to the lockdown,” reveals Irfan.

So who is playing Mithun’s role in the musical? “We are now looking for new faces as this is a live musical and the artiste not only has to dance and perform but has to sing live which is quite tough—and like in real life, there are not going to be any retakes here,” he reveals.
There are many budding writers who want to be lyricists but is the environment conducive for them? Irfan reasons, “Lyrics writing is different from poetry. I cannot write poetry for an item song that is needed for a situation besides scope for good lyrics has reduced”.
Talking about the time when writers strived to keep poetry alive, Irfan rues, “I have seen poetry get butchered in recent times. But there are some good writers who have kept poetry alive even today. But that does not mean I would discourage those who want to become lyricists. Writing is the only profession you cannot learn — either you have it in you or you don’t. All I have to tell them is that learn to express your feelings through your writing and you will connect and make an impact in people’s life. It happened with me with the song ‘Aaashayein’ from ‘Iqbal’ as Nagesh Kukunoor tells me is a prayer in schools and I think that is a best reward one can get.’’
Irfan believes that it was destiny that led him to Salim Suleiman, who are making the musical. “I was writing lyrics for my friend Rajiv Goswami’s music video where I met Salim Suleiman who composed the songs of the album. They liked my work and offered me ‘Iqbal’ happened and my journey began and here I am today. I believe that if you’re meant to achieve something, you’ll achieve it no matter what. You have to be honest in your work and put in your effort and leave it to your destiny’’.
So who would Irfan want to see in the film remake of ‘Disco Dancer’? “Tiger Shroff he is the best dancer we have today. Don’t know if you are aware that Sa Re Ga Ma had brought out a single ‘I am a Disco Dancer’ with the actor. Incidentally, the song was composed by Salim Suleiman and will be part of the musical too,” concludes Irfan.
